TAKING OUT THE TRASH...
Ooooook!! Well I did my first garbage weigh in this Thursday evening (10/10/19). I wasn't really sure what to expect to be honest. In terms of recycling, we produced a lot more that I thought we would... 12.55 pounds to be exact. This did include a large box from Amazon and a few bottles of wine from a friends gathering but STILL... jeez. The actual throw away in the garbage trash ending up weighing 8.8 pounds. This was a bit less than I expected, as I read 15-22 pounds was the average weight of a trash bag and we had one and half bag... but ours didn't have anything substantial in it and was definitely underfilled. That's 21.35 pounds total for the week! YIKES!!!
So I didn't make too many changes to my Friday grocery shopping... I'm hoping to use the first two weeks weigh-in's as an average of what I am improving upon.
I'd like everyone to meet one of my lil angels, Riley. Riley is nine years old and a cancer survivor. She had surgery a couple years ago to remove it, and while it was a success, she can't wait very long if she has to pee so we leave dog pee pads out for her. Of course the other two dogs see the pee pads and use them as well sometimes. This means we throw out a decent amount of soiled pads, probably our largest item of waste every week.
My garbage can holds two garbage bags at the same time so one can sort their garbage if they wanted. This week I am going to try to use of the garbage bags for my dog pee pads and the other for everything else. I know that the dog pee pads are something that I really can't reduce all that much so I'm curious to how much of them I go through in a week.
I'm going to try to post two blog posts a week. One over the weekend to report on my trash weigh-in results and one mid-week to discuss some issues or concerns or surprising things I learned about during my research. Coming up sometime mid-week I'll be touching upon some things I learned about recycling here in my city. And for you lovers of pictures of trash, look below for pics of this weeks mass of trash (10/4/10-10/10/19). Thanks for reading and check back soon!
